Known faults: tick the ones you find
Recalls: ask the seller
Have the authorised dealer check the chassis number; an open recall is normally repaired free of charge.
- 2025 · Passenger seat belt anchorage: KBA 15269R (VW code 69PD, July 2025): on 39,131 Golf 8 and Variant cars worldwide built between 9 February and 24 May 2024 (Germany: 17,376), the front passenger seat belt may have been attached incorrectly at the B-pillar anchor point; protection in a crash could be reduced. An authorised workshop checks the belt and anchor and replaces a part if needed (about 1 hour). The manufacturer stated that no accidents or injuries were reported. There is also a parallel entry covering the same problem on 10 cars under KBA 15275R (VW 69PP).
- 2020 · Infotainment (MIB3) software update: A voluntary service measure (freiwillige Servicemaßnahme) was applied to about 56,000 Golf 8 cars because of the infotainment and rear-view camera software; complaints of screen freezing were reported. Whether the scope is Germany or worldwide is unclear from the single source; no KBA record was found. It is not a legally mandatory recall.
- 2020 · eCall emergency call software: It was found that in some cars the eCall system may fail to place the emergency call successfully in a crash; the KBA monitored this recall (15,008 vehicles in Germany, 36,166 worldwide), sales were temporarily halted and a software update was applied.
Service history: ask for records
Ask for the service book or invoices. These items should have been done on time:
- Engine oil + oil filter (every 15,000 km / every 12 months)
- Pollen filter (every 30,000 km / every 24 months)
- Air filter (every 60,000 km / every 72 months)
- Spark plugs (every 60,000 km / every 72 months)
- Brake fluid (every 24 months)
- Timing belt inspection (every 210,000 km)
Check on the test drive
- Start the engine cold: there should be no smoke, shaking or odd noises.
- With the ignition on, all warning lights should flash once and then none should stay lit.
- The brakes should not shudder, pull or squeal.
- On a straight road the car should not drift when you loosen the wheel; there should be no thuds or creaks over bumps.
- The air conditioning and all electrical equipment (windows, mirrors, multimedia) should work.
- Gear changes should be smooth; there should be no judder or slipping when pulling away.
- Dual-clutch gearbox: if it judders or jerks on hills or in stop-and-go traffic, walk away.
- Turbo: there should be no blue or white smoke or unusual whistling when you accelerate.
